 Month of March 2007

March 22, 2008

After arriving at Twin Lakes here in St. David, Az and taking a few days off doing nothing, it is about time to get the journal and ourselves involved in all the things that are happening around us.

The park has really grown and is just as nice as I remember it from the last time that we were here. The weather could not be better and the people working here have been just the greatest.
Throughout the week we took in a couple dinners, which by the were just mouth watering.
On Saturday they have a Craft Show.

Carol wanted to go and sell some of here table cloths and business cards, and of course she had to bribe me to go along. Let's see, what could she possible bribe me with:

Coffee and Cinnamon Rolls:

(I believe this park is just made for Mike he can get his coffee anytime and as you can see so do other RV'ers, the coffee pot is where you meet and tell those stories)

Now I really started to get worried when all the other people started to show up and I found out that they wanted some of MY cinnamon rolls. Yep, I thought I was going to take all of them. There is always tomorrow morning, and what a way to wake up, Cinnamon Rolls and a hot cup of coffee while reading what is happening in the world on your computer. But fear not, look what is coming up the walk:

OH BOY, MY TOMORROW CINNAMON ROLLS.

these Cinnamon rolls are hand baked & made every Saturday by the park Manager and husband Pam and Dave, they are big, delicious & hot right out of the oven.

Oh yes, I had to give Carol one bite, and that is all she got!

Here are some pictures of the other RV'ers that were there:

Chet hand carves his birds and he does know his southwest birds,

Arno and Jeanne show us there trip to Copper Canyon as tail gunners for Fantasy Tours

Great Banana Nut Bread

We went to the Easter Dinner and it was just great. Ham with all the dressing. Captain Bill & his wife who put on the Magic Show last night Saturday ate with us and we all enjoyed the conversation and the company.
Well, enough for today...there is always tomorrow....oh yes

Cinnamon Rolls to wake up to.

I decided not to delete last years journal for each month so we can read all that we have done over the year.  I finally took time to go to Tubac and look around, the town has grown tremendously, used to be a quiet town small and very few visitors, now it is a large Artist community and in February triples its visitors.  The word is out starting Feb. 6th for 5 days artist from California, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona come to display there art.  This is one event you won't want to miss, bring your walking shoes and make sure you have at least 2-3 days to see it all.  Also if you need to park the rig call a park in August so you are sure to get a spot, this is also when the Gem show is going on.  Lots too do in the area at this time of year.

Mike's Turn

Ok, Carol has shamed me into writing something for the page.
As ya already know we left Texas and made it to Abita Springs, La.

The weather down here has been just great. A little fog in the morning just enough to block the sun, and still be warm where you could wear shorts. Me!!!! Know way. My chicken legs haven't seen any sun for about 20 years. They would probably just shrivel up and look like prunes that have just been picked. Or, is that pickled.

Stayed at a park just outside Hammond, La, and if I ever had owned an RV park this is the way I would like to set it up. A lot of concrete, stepped off the stall that we were in and it measured 24ft wide by 60ft. Sure wish that we had it down in Texas, with all the rain, and all the BIG lakes that were around the coach, not to mention the MUD. This park has a big fishing lake, and it was where it was supposed to be, and not all around the coach like an island. The grass was all open for easy mowing, and each stall had more than enough to play ball in. The dog didn't mind that one little bit. If ya ever get down this way I would highly recommend it.

Except on the weekends. They have two sections, one for the monthly's and one for the overnighters. Of course they stick the kids in the overnighters section..Hey, we were invaded by 10,000 kids, most under 6, and they all had a bike.

Those training wheels were like screaming jets on takeoff. Mom and Dad egg them on to get out of their hair, so all ya heard was small rattling as they started, and then a loud hmmmmmm, only to grow into a stupendous roar as the wheels vibrated on the small little axles. Which by the way had at least 2 inches of play on both sides. Y
ep, here comes one, no, it's a whole army of them. There's a whole bunch coming from the other way.   They have filled the street and heading toward each other like a herd of stampeding cattle, and not one of them knows what a brake is. Wait that one is headed for the lake, there's daddy slipping and sliding, huffing and puffin, doing his best to catch up.  Where's Mom, oh she is the one screaming  stop, stop, STOP  ! !   Like that is really doing any good, or the kid could even hear her over those darn training wheels. It must be a MOM thing.

I have a mission. That is to go back to the BBQ place on Sunday for lunch, takeout of course. Carol, wanted to be pampered. Ok, what the heck, she has had a tough day. SURE! Anyhow sounded like a good idea. GOOD FOOD. Will say one thing, the food down here is GREAT. I am trying everything that I can, and have not been disappointed once. Yum Yum. Ok, back to the BBQ. Got all my honey doos done, took the dog out for his many daily tree and grass smelling walks.  What the heck is that dog looking for.  More poop that isn't his? Yuk.

Put air in the bike tires, well, ya get the idea. Anyhow it was my time to cook. Oh, for you guys and dolls that know how I cook. It consist of KFC,Pizza,Whataburger, ect, ect.

Got in the trusty steed of a Lexus turned the key on, and like lion she started up and really purred. I really think that she was asking me to put the pedal to the metal just to see who would chicken out first. Me or her.
But, I was a nice guy and drove the 5mph speed limit not to get any points on the kids. Heck, they were passing me, giving me the evil eye, and it looked like a couple of them wanted to play chicken.
Maybe, the Lexus, knew what was coming, the revenge of the youngness'. She forget to tell me. Got to get out of this park and get something to eat before they run me over. Whew, got to the main road, for a little side road it is very busy street. Waited and waited and waited, oops, there are the kids, they are following me. Got to go, who knows even though they are very young, there are more of them than me. Hit the gas and go. Chit, big truck, screeching of tires, blue smoke, loud airborne, couple of 4 letter words. All I could say was "thank you". I better speed up a little just so he won't ride my bumper. Hey, ya can't really blame the trucker. I was at a dead stop and he must have been going 120 miles a hour. Whew, finally made it to the BBQ place. AT LAST.  Oh, no. No, don't tell me. CLOSED on Sunday.  I know, I 'll make bologna sandwiches
.

Work my buns off, almost get killed by a bunch of 5 and 6 year olds, get a trucker really upset, and I still don't get anything to eat. And the worst of it is, I have to return back on the same route. No shortcut, or other way to get back, but the way I came. Can I possibly make it back to the coach to live another day !

Man, know body told me how tough this retirement was going to be.
Until the next time:
Mike

Carol's Turn

e left Rockport on Wednesday the 21st heading towards Louisiana, stopping at a casino for an overnight free stay.  The casino Cachutta was in Louisiana and being an Indian Casino. I just gave them my money and left, at least we did not have to pay for staying in there lot (oh right, I lost money so I did pay)

Anyway it was a nice casino, then we headed onto Baton Rouge crossing over from Texas it was green grass and lots of color with bushes blooming and flowers along the roadside, the weather was cloudy but was comfortable, the roads were so horrible that many items that usually stay put fell off of the counters and walls.  Whoever decided that concrete roads were the way to go should be shot, there was construction all the way from Texas to Louisiana, and they are putting in more concrete. How about something else guys!!

Anyway we ended up in Lakeside, LA on the 22nd, the RV park it is extremely clean large spots, back-ins but ample room to put RV, tow dolly and car.  The cost here was $13.88 for the night (Passport America) or $25. if not a member.

On the 23rd went to Hammond just down the road, to have the a awning looked at by Camping World. They found the hardware to be damaged, now new hardware has to be installed. Since it will not get here in time, before leaving Louisiana, we will have them ship to a Camping World in Alabama and install it there.  While here we have purchased Texas Holdem Chips, if there are no Holdem card activities set up at the RV parks we go to, we will be able to suggest we put the card game on.  Mike and I both enjoy playing and would miss the two days a week we played at Bayview, hopefully we can do this.

We found a restaurant Wayne's' on the way back from Hammond,
that had the best pork and beef barbeque that we both have ever tastedThat's Wayne serving his ribs and etc. If you are ever in Lakeside, LA stop by and meet Wayne.

It has been 7 months since Mike retired from the railroad and he has yet to miss the work and the RR or the telephone calls from the dispatcher, I love not hearing the phone ring at all times of the day and the way we can finally plan things, in the 30 some years he worked there, we were never able to plan anything as he would most likely be out of town.

I only miss the fact that he was gone for 2 days and home for 2, we do get on each others nerves once in awhile especially when it comes to who watches what on TV.  I have Thursday, Friday and Sunday nights and he gets the rest to see what he wants.  This arrangement finally is working out.  I must admit I am enjoying him home most of the time, and do not find I have lost my sanity yet.  He rides his bike at least an hour a day, something he really loves to do and with his playing of the guitar (practicing) he and I are somewhat compatible.  I have done a lot of reading and am really enjoying the traveling.  The 9 weeks we stayed in one place (Rockport) was nice, as you were able to get to know the people and the surrounding area much better then staying for two weeks.  Two weeks is just right you know there is not much to do in the area.  I can see in the future we are going to have to decide where we will spend the winters, staying for more then the 2 weeks, and the summers is going to be for traveling in the north and just spending the two weeks.

Right now we are still heading for PA and hope to be there by May 15th, then onto Niagara Falls. Until tomorrow
Love Carol

It will be time to leave this Wed. the 21st and some of the folks we have meet, Pam who is a great poker dealer and who makes magnetic jewelry, also who can remember everyone's name the minute you are introduced, can't figure out how she does it.  Her laugh is contagious and we have had great fun and laughs at her table. Steve and Pam run the Texas Holdem games here at the club house and they make all of the nights playing fun and entertaining you don't even mine losing,
Thank you Pam and Steve

Roseanne
who also teaches and makes delicate jewelry, she has a wonderful smile and makes you feel comfortable the minute you meet her. Her and her husband (sitting across from me) are from Canada

Bob and Faye they are from here in Texas, Bob is the dealer Mike talks about below. Fay his wife, has a great since of humor and she is a joy to be around.

Here is another lady who has a contagious laugh Nina
, we have lots of fun playing poker together and making jewelry, her husband and I seem to be out of the poker game around the same time so we keep each other company until Nina is out (she usually is in the final 4), then a bunch of us start our own Texas Holdem playing for pennies. I will miss all of these people and many more who have made our visit her to Rockport and Bayview RV resort a wonderful experience. Thank you to everyone and we hope to meet up with you in the future.

Our final dinner here in Rockport eating out was at Charlotte Plummer The dinner was very good since they serve fresh fish, I had the shrimp sampler plate and Mike had the flounder, all great. I must admit that if you like Mexican food this is not the place to eat it, they have Tex-Mex here and none of the restaurants were good.  Would not recommend anything but the restaurants that specialize in fish dishes only.

This is my last journal for this area and will write in about a week when we get settled into Abita Springs RV resort in Louisiana, just north of New Orleans

Wow what a wonderful St. Patrick's Day dinner (one of the cooks in the picture he is the one wearing the hat) dinner was great, the entertainment by Terry and Holly even better.

Mike and I enjoyed the friendship and watching people dancing.

We had a great time.

This morning we went to the Fulton Mansion here in Fulton (Rockport) what a house, took pictures but could not use the flash has this is museum and if everyone started to use their flash eventually the antiques would get ruin. Here are some of what I could take the rest are on the

Texas Photo page
The home built in 1876 was not typical of this area, since the Fulton's actually came from Philadelphia they had wanted to build there retirement home here and after the Victorian style at that time.  The home has withstood 4 hurricanes one of which in 1919 hit the house with 200 ft waves from the gulf, a boat ended up in the front porch and yet the home withstood the 6ft of water inside the first floor.  It was really something to see, I could not climb to the upstairs as there were over 40 steps to get to the second floor, but from what I read the upper floors were just as grand as the downstairs.  This home was the first to have indoor plumbing and had over 3 baths in it. the cost at that time was around $600 for the plumbing which was an extreme price for the 1800's .  If you should ever get on over here to Texas I would recommend you seeing this mansion.

March 17, 2007
This morning, overcast the temperature cool and very comfortable, we first went to the craft sells here in the park where they had large cinnamon rolls, of course, the icing was green.  We then went to the Flower Shrimp store at 1119 S. Church where we purchased really huge fresh shrimp they are about 8" long and since they only sell shrimp (they own their own Shrimp boat) they had several sizes of course we choose the largest.  I will freeze them since we have plans for the next 3 days of eating out, and then I hope to find a good recipe to use them over rice and also to barbeque.

I wanted to take some pictures of the birds around here only did not see any, but here are some pictures of what are in the bird sanctuary

Reddish Egret

Great Egret
Snowy Egret

We think we saw the Snowy Egret from across the water thru the telescope but are not sure, the birds around here are beautiful, I have never seen these before and are really enjoying them.

Tonight we will be going to the St. Patrick's Dinner held in the clubhouse,  picture of back of clubhouse from across the water where we are parked. The lake here has turtles, birds, fish and alligators, have not seen the alligator yet.

Till later Happy St. Patrick's Day

March 16, 2007
Wow what a why to start the day, went to have a pedicure and the owner put champagne in the water, not only did IT feel good but I was inhaling the fumes and boy did I felt so great too bad we are leaving I would like to have more of these pedicures.  We then went to the barbeque here in the park and Steve made some great hamburgers and the soup was great.  Going to a St. Patrick's dinner tomorrow night and the dance. Terry and Holly will be doing the dance they are great singers and know this will be lots of fun.

We had a terrific storm the other night, no damage we were lucky, several others here in the park had some hail damage, we were also under Tornado watch and I was ready to pack it in.  I don't like being anywhere where there could be a tornado let alone a storm like we had.  Hope the weather is better where we are going.

 Peter, back atcha
Ok, this is a private joke, but to let ya all know what is going on, in the private life of a full timer having some good times with all of the people that you meet.

Tonight was Texas Holdem dollar night. For some reason you like to pick the table that you played at the last time that you went, and most of the time you will have the same, or near the same people that you played cards with the week before.
How Bob , the dealer, can remember all the names of all the people that he meets, just knocks my socks off. This is one thing that I have never been able to do. My thing would be, Hi, How are you doing, knowing the face, but the name always eludes me. And, they always remember my name, and I just can't bring myself to ask for the name again, being that I probably have been told it about a dozen times. Got to work on this.

Anyhow, Bob, had a problem tonight. When he started dealing the cards, of course with a cup of ???, I don't know what was in the cup, setting right in front of him, and really giving him a problem. First, so not to tip the cup over, dropped his chips on the floor, then, dropped some cards on the floor. So, after a little, and a lot of ribbing he finally placed the cup on the floor. Wouldn't ya know it, spilled it all over the place. He wouldn't tell anyone what was in it, I guess you will have to use your own imagination, probably coffee. Anyhow, after getting all the ribbing and getting red in the face, and then spilling the cup, this really set the table in gear to asking if we could have some. Man, nothing else could go wrong. He, was having one of my nights. But low and behold, I did mention that he was the dealer, oh yes, I remember. Well, anyhow, he likes to use a joker to cut the cards with and places it always on the bottom. Being the prime and proper card dealer that he is.  As the hand was done, he got the cards back and started to shuffle them, of coarse he takes the joker out to shuffle them, but low and behold as the joker is lying on the table what should show upside down in the middle of the deck as he is shuffling. ANOTHER JOKER. Oh no, Yep, another red face. This is fixed real fast. He ask, " Who gave me these cards.". Hey, Bob, ya going to count the cards to see is we have a whole deck. Naw, they are just fine. Shuffle up and Deal.

I still don't know what was in the cup, but, I WANT SOME Now, to explain the first line of this little note.

Then there is this guy called Peter, don't know why, it probably IS his name. I always have a ball when we are playing poker, he'll pick on me and of course I have to pick on him. He is always saying that he is waiting for the hand just to say," BACK AT CHA".
I am sure that when that day comes, it will be me on the losing hand. What a thing to be looking forward to. Walt, who is parked next to us here at the park. Just couldn't do any wrong. Every time he would get into the pot, he would win. Yuk. I can't get any chips if he keeps winning. Oh well, he was getting the cards. I thought he was bluffing once, and wouldn't ya know it, yep, he had the cards and I crashed and burned.

Listen, I lost playing cards on Sunday, and here it is Wed, and I lost again. Ya have to admit. I am consistent. But what the heck, for 6 bucks I had a whale of a time. The people  that ya meet and the enjoyment that ya have is more that worth it.

I'll BE BACK, yep, I want my money back.
Till next time.

Mike

March 13, 2007
I learned how to make earrings today, Pam is a great teacher and had a lot of bead choices.  You know the problems I have had with finding a hairdresser, today was just one more example, the hairdresser I had gone to when we first came to Rockport, put the color on wrong and I ended up with split ends.  I decided to give her another try so made an appointment to have her do it again.  She called this morning and decided I was too difficult and would not do my hair.  So I told Pam about it and she informed me Linda was a hairdresser here in the park.  So I am having Linda come over to do my hair today, this is extremely convenient as I don't have to go anywhere she can do it right here in the rig, and after seeing Pam's hair I believe she will do a good job.  Played online Texas Holdem last night and for the first time came in first. Even through not playing for money still felt good.  Have come in several times 2nd but this was the first time 1st for me.  Play for real money tomorrow night.  This is one thing I will miss about being in a park for 2 weeks or more, meeting of people and getting to know them better as you are around them more, all are from different areas of the country including Canada and all are so great, haven't meet anyone I didn't like right off.  Now I am babbling. Sorry

Linda did my hair and she did a great job!  Wish I had her do it in the first place. It's great to have wonderful people here in the park that do all kinds of crafts and jobs for each other.  Thanks Linda

Till later Carol

March 12, 2007
Here it is the middle of March and the rain has started again.  It was quite a storm last night with the thunder and lightning, about 3 inches in a matter of 10 minuets.  We had to go into Corpus today and get Brigg groomed before leaving the area, tomorrow I am going to learn how to make earrings and hope that I can come up with some idea as to make money on the road.  A lot of people make things to show at the craft shows in the RV parks.

Mike visited his friend, a conductor on the railroad today while in Corpus, we weren't there very long so had time to kill and ended up going shopping, finally bought a new purse, haven't had one in years and found one that was on sell. Love it.  Mike is hoping that the rain stops as he says Louisiana is really getting it and doesn't want to be in anymore rain neither do I.  Played Texas Holdem again on Sunday and did not do as well as I had been, since having this cold for the last 10 days haven't felt that great and not into doing much but just had to get out of the RV.  Mike made the final table but he too lost before the money paid.  Hope everyone is keeping up with our journal, and will write more later this week.

 Latter Carol

March 8, 2007
Haven't been up to par with the web page, but heck, I have been busy. Let's see, yep got up in the mornings, well, almost morning if ya count noon still morning. Went and played poker every chance that I get and took care of all the honey do items. Whew, that is a lot.  Been lucky lately, won 3 weeks in a row 2 first place wins and one third place, total so far about $54 looks like I need to take Carol to dinner, or else!

We have left Fulton Oaks RV Park and checked in back at the Western Horizons for 14 days. I have been worried that it might still be to cold to head north, but, if the weather here gets much warmer, I will be ready to go.

Plan A, was to hit around New Orleans for 14 days and then hit Alabama for 14 days. I don't know. Ahh, there is one thing that might really mess things up. The reservation for the one in Alabama can only be made 30 days in advance. So, tomorrow I will try to make the reservation, but, if it can't be done, we'll just have to work with what we have. It looks like it might be warming up faster than I thought it would. Although, I keep looking at New York and they aren't doing to well on warming up.
Some of the other campers are going to Houston, which by the way, play Texas Holdem, about 4 to 5 nights a week..Hmmmmmmm.

Could there be a plan B coming around the corner.
Carol, is worried about the gas prices as we go further north, and with good reason. It seems the further north that we go the higher it gets. That plan B might come into effect just for that reason.
Oh well, we'll stick with Plan A, and just go with the flow. Heck, like we are in a hurry, or really have to be somewhere on a certain date. That is not all untrue, when ya make a reservation, they really get upset if you don't keep it.
Been here for almost 2 mo, and haven't got down to see Jack Kellem yet, heck, he probably thinks that I forgot about him.. Nope. I can't seem to get out of Rockport, and down there to Flower Bluff. But, this Monday, well I think it is Monday, we are supposed to drop the dog off at the groomers and get him all fixed up. This should give us some time to run over and at least say Hi. Just my luck, I will knock on the door and his wife will come out and say that he went fishing. Well, see.
Take care,
Mike

March 3 2007
Here it is already March and we are still in Fulton, heading back to Rockport this Wednesday. Mike feels we might still be here another 4 weeks instead of two being as there are so many tornados to the east of us.  And we both don't want to be in that kind of weather.  I am ready to move on, love the people here but not the area.  There really is nothing to do, so have had a lot of time to read and play poker. We go about 3 days a week to play and Mike finally won his first tournament, he won $30 and now he can play some more.  I feel 4 weeks is long enough in an area and hope that from now on that is all we will spend unless the area is so great weather, activities and surrounding attractions.

New picture of Brooke she is getting older and Kathy she is starting to talk. See more of her growing up on her own page Brook's Page

I am trying to quit smoking, not only because of the price of cigarettes but hoping I can get to walking more. Today will be my first real day I had quit for about 3 days and then smoked again this time I bought the patch to help me and lot's of lollipops.  Wish me luck!
